ADELINE - an attractive French woman in her early twenties
WILL – man in his mid-twenties
A bus stop bench is center stage, there is light coming from the lamp post on stage right. A sign indicating the bus stop is upstage stage left. A cluster of white daises is surrounding the base of the bus sign. Will is sitting on the left side of the bench, he is wearing a suit a bit too big for him and his tie is loosened.
Adeline walks in from stage left, crosses in front of Will and sits on the right side of the bench. Will’s eyes follow her the whole way. Adeline notices Will staring at her, but looks down at her purse in her lap.
It’s a nice night don’t you think?
The night, it’s uh nice, not too hot, not too cold, you know?
Adeline tilts her head and gives Will a perplexed look.
Never mind- my name’s Will.
Will outstretches his hand towards Adeline. She hesitantly places her hand in his.
That’s my name
(he nervously laughs a bit and takes his hand back from her)
Adeline thinks for a moment to try and string together the words
(thick French accent)
Name is Adeline
You don’t speak English, do you?
Adeline shakes her head and smiles at Will. The sound of a bus is heard from off stage. Adeline fumbles in her purse for her ticket.
Since you do not speak English, nor will I probably ever see you again, I suppose there is no harm in this
Will walks over to the daises at the base of the bus stop sign, picks the tallest one, and walks back over to Adeline, handing the daisy to her
I hope you have a lovely night, it was a pleasure to be in the company of someone so beautiful, if only for a few moments
Adeline accepts the flower and smiles
Adeline leans over and gives him a peck on the cheek before walking off stage right. Will sits back down on the bench and the lights fade out.
