danger zones

By Kendra Baxter

We, society, are no longer safe,

in the pews, on bended knees,

in deep solemn prayer.

We are no longer safe,

     on the playgrounds,

where children run and play carefree.

We are no longer safe,

where salty, buttery popcorn is savored

and enjoyed in front of the big screen.

We are no longer safe,

seated in our desks, ready to learn

in order to be prepared for life.

We are no longer safe,

in our sneakers and bib numbers

ready to run for a cause.

We are no longer safe, anywhere.
