Owl Song

By Sarah Essa

Summer comes to bright green lawns

Where once were rolling fields

And I must live

Through winter’s death

A maiden golden haired

Who sung of darkness

in transient white rooms

I dream of you

Who I left too soon

Don’t sing nightingale

While the show goes on

While hedgehogs dance

While the pink moon hangs

“A luminary clock against the sky”

I do not sit in indecisiveness

You do not hide behind the night

We wore red lips and skirts

Like war paint and armor

Balloon girls free in discontent

I wish to distill the nectar of your mind

In plastic metal glass and the sparks between

But like Orion on the horizon

You slip from my grasp as the seasons change
