Summers Night

By Nanci Miguel

Close the door
Wait three heartbeats
And tiptoe past the red door
Lean on the faded yellow walls
And pass room 213
Squeeze through narrow halls
And don’t get caught

Walk by the flickering lamp
And step on the worn out carpet
Stop and listen for any movement
Start walking again and
Trip on loose thread
Stifle a cry

Cover blown

Bolt down the stairs
Shove the door open
And let it slam shut
Take three deep breathes
Walk along the path in the dead of night
Admire how clear the stars shine

Continue on until you feel the water
Look down and see the ocean
Take three steps in
And sink onto the sand
See the waves patting the sand floor
Listen to the rhythmic sound

Take three breaths
And drift to sleep
